The CIH (Certified Industrial
Hygienist) is an internationally recognized certification
granted by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). It
is the only certification process for scientists in industrial
hygiene with the following qualifications:
- A bachelors or advanced college
degree in the sciences or engineering.
- A minimum of 5 years of full
time professional experience.
- Adherence to a strict code of
ethics.
- Required continuing practice and
on-going professional education.
- Successful completion of two
full days of written (closed book)
examinations. The exams contain
questions on the following subjects: Biohazards; biostatistics and epidemiology; engineering
controls; non-engineering controls; ergonomics; ethics and
management; analytical chemistry; sampling, monitoring and
instrumentation; noise and vibration; ionizing radiation;
nonionizing radiation; regulations, standards, and guidelines;
thermal and pressure stressors; toxicology; and general IH topics
including community exposures, hazardous wastes, risk
communication, indoor environmental quality, and others (unit
operations, process safety, and confined spaces).
